Glenn Holland takes a job as a music teacher at John F Kennedy High School, in order to have “free time” to compose. However, he soon finds that his job as a teacher is more time-consuming than he first thought.
After some time, Glenn grows exasperated when it seems that none of his students have learned anything from his classes. His exasperation is further compounded when the school’s Principal Mrs. Jacobs, chastises him for not focusing properly on his students.
Glenn expounds this information to his wife Iris, who then informs him that she’s pregnant. After some soul-searching, Glenn decides to try and try some unconventional methods of teaching music appreciation, including the use of ‘Rock and Roll’ to interest students.
Glenn’s teaching methods do not go unnoticed by Principal Jacobs, or Vice-Principal Wolters. While Wolters is upset at these turn of events, Jacobs is willing to allow Mr Holland to continue, as he believes strongly in what he is doing. Along with exciting the class, Glenn also helps a clarinet player named Gertrude Lang, who has struggled to play perfectly through the entire school year.
That summer, Glenn teaches Driver’s Education in the summer to support his family, and their son Cole is born.
