Hi Bessie, we've been friends on facebook but I haven't really interacted much with you. Tonight for some reason I felt compelled to. I am completely inspired by what you and your family are doing. I have been married to Harry for 18 years. We have two children, Jordan 18 and Tijana 15. We have homeschooled both our children which has meant that we had the freedom to cut loose and let go at times. Our letting go was a three month road trip around Europe when they were 14 and 12. What an amazing experience it was to leave your life behind for that amount of time. It was a fundamental gift to our marriage and gave our family a time together that we always talk and laugh about. I think it's important for families to cut loose and get away not just for a couple of weeks but to take a break from the 'rut of life' so that you have time for conversations that are more important like, what are we going to do, see and eat together? To enjoy the quiet times and to talk about things that have value and meaning. To have this journey at this stage in your families life is a true gift to you all. It will define many moments and decisions for you for years to come. I hope I can meet you Bessie when I'm in Sydney next week from Monday 24th May. If not, please stop by and join us for dinner at our home in Newport, Melbourne when you are here. Stay in the flow.

I just love what Geoff wrote about "Who said you are unlucky"
If you have food in the fridge etc etc. It really puts everything in perspective and makes you feel very grateful for what you have rather than what you do not. I find myself relaying this message to people who I hear complaining about not having the latest this or that or other minor inconveniences.
You are coming out with some really good quotes Geoff, I enjoy them.

I thought you may be interested in a website I have created to hopefully spread some goodwill and kind messages around the world.
It is called Heartsay (heartsay.com)and it is FREE to join and place messages. My intention for setting up the site was to encourage people to place messages for people they care about that would normally be expensive in newspapers but now are no cost. I have even made a category for World Peace to encourage some inspirational thoughts to be placed to inspire this. There is also Birthday, Birth Congratulations, Bereavement, Remembrance, Medical Thanks, Valentines and many more. There is a category for Tragic Events to place compassionate messages to victims and also a Happy Event to place congratulations for great achievements. This is not like Facebook it is more like placing a public notice to show the world who you are acknowledging. There are some upgrades available at a small cost but for the Basic 30 day message it is FREE. If anyone is interested they can go to the site and read the About Us and also the 1, 2, 3, instructions which will explain the whole purpose and good intention of Heartsay. My main aim is to encourage people to show people they care and appreciate them as too many times we lose people from our lives without having the chance to tell them what they mean to us. As I say on Heartsay "Kind Words Are A Valuable Gift As They Remain In The Heart Forever" Good Luck Bessie and Geoff with your adventure, I enjoy reading your stories.
I would like to say 'good on you' for what you are doing, you won't regret it. in 2001 we sold our house and travelled around australia for 13 months with 2 small children, (3 and 18 months old), the people we met and places we saw left indelible memories with us for the rest of our lives. come 2010 we are ready to do it again, the house is on the market and we are hoping to do the same when it sells, the children are now 12 and 10 and the memories that they will come back with will be much greater than any material things that we can provide them.

Good Luck in your travels - we may see you somewhere in this great big country of ours!!

In November 2009, I travelled on a humanitarian aid mission across Afghanistan, in an old dusty Toyota Hi-ace van with fellow Rotarians, a florist from Arizona, a Nurse from Texas and a US Marine Korean War veteran. We drove along the ancient Silk Road through hostile enemy territory, amidst kidnappings and car bombings. The result, witnessing the resilience and courage of women and children struggling to survive a war zone. It was amazing!

Hi Guys - I heard you this morning on Byron's Bay Fm - and felt compelled to give you my input - especially as regards your question as to 'our purpose' - and whether to seek it or not.

You mention that some have warned against obsessing about their purpose and the potential for madness to ensue... I couldn't agree more! I have been there and done just that. In fact, I've been to lot of places I shouldn't - including sadly many occult spiritualities - reiki & other energy healings, astrology, psychics, crystal therapies, new age 'tarot', yogic meditations etc.

I have now come full circle and realised it was all part and parcel of a great deception.. to lead me away from God and into the devil's hands.

I now have one purpose in life - and one only: to follow Christ and let him lead me. Perhaps the devil's greatest triumph in the modern world is his successful propagation of the 'love of self'. It is important to love ourselves of course - but I now understand that this can only be achieved by loving God first. Once we do this - our daily purpose in life becomes clear.

Only with daily prayer and faith in God - can we ever hope to enter his kingdom while here on earth. We are God's children - and he is our loving 'father'. If we try to be our own god - as modern society & occult leaders so often encourage us to do - we will only fail. Likewise, if we try to follow God's commandments - it's impossible alone! Only with God in our hearts can we begin to triumph over the temptation to sin (or 'unlove' ourselves and others) - all part of the devil's life-taking plan!

God has a purpose for each and every one of us - and it may change from day to day. Today - the Holy Spirit moved me to share on this website. When I'm finished, he'll move me to the next task! How wonderful to know God loves me and is in charge!

One thing is for sure - Jesus' purpose was to save us - ALL! And all God wants is for us to trust and believe in that truth - and turn to Him so that He can save us! The only purpose I believe God wants us to fulfill is to have a relationship with Him (which is to say, also - 'Her' - for we were all made in God's image and 'He' is both male and female!).

I'll leave you with some favourite scriptures,

God Bless You All!

"...you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment." Mark 12:30

"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. " Matthew 6:33 ['these things' refers to our everyday needs for food, shelter, clothing etc. - this scripture also tells us that we are far more important to God than everyday things or even animals]

“But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.’ ” Mark 10:17-27

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”
~ Philippians 4:6-7

It's always great to hear of other people who have taken a leap of faith to renounce the rat race and live a more meaningful life. Keep up the good work!

For myself, I had a life changing experience about 12 years ago. I was 21 years old, working as a bar manager in a very expensive cafe/bar in Double Bay, Sydney, Australia. I felt my life was empty and meaningless though I had what most young people equated with a happy life (money, girls, etc.). Slowly I started questioning where it was all leading to and I realised that material things could never satisfy my soul. Finally I discovered God in my life and realised that we were not put on earth for the purpose of making money, but for the purpose of loving others and living a meaningful life.

After reading the Gospels I found Jesus taught to "sell everything you have and give the money to the poor" (Luke 12:33). This was indeed a radical teaching to me, as I had never heard it preached or practised in any church I knew of. I decided that being a Christian meant following in Jesus' footsteps, so with the help of some friends I sold up everything I had and gave it all away. My life has never been the same since, and I never want to go back to the rat-race-money-seeking-system.

I started by living in a tent and travelling around with some new found friends, a married couple and their 3 year old kid living in a small toyota hi-ace van. Soon after I was invited to go to India to do some volunteer work there teaching English and encouraging a non-materialistic lifestyle. I spent two years there and then travelled around other countries, experiencing meaningful adventures along the way, and without earning a single paycheck. I am currently living in Kenya with my wife, and have been here for about four years. We run a free volunteer centre where we provide food and accommodation to anyone who wants to lend a hand. We are mostly focusing on teaching English at local schools and working on a permaculture garden.

I can only but recommend to anyone and everyone to think deeply about what life is all about and to not be sucked in by the pressures of a consumerist society. Mortgages, bills, credit-cards, i-pods, dvd players, etc. can never bring you lasting happiness. That is not to say that if you give up everything you currently have, you will never have access to such technology. But when you do have access to it, you will be truly thankful and not tied down by them.

I hope The Life Change Experiment will encourage others to step out of the Matrix and live a more fulfilling life.
